Simon Mason, Design Manager, Thomas Dudley Ltd.
The main purpose of my job is project management and progress reporting at board level. I organise design meetings to discuss in detail all aspects of current projects with all departments within our company. I also offer advice to the design team in all aspects of the design process.
My work environment is mainly office-based within the design department although a large amount of my time is spent liaising with other departments throughout our site such as office, factory assembly and testing, tool making. As a department we work as a team on most projects although we do allocate team leaders for individual projects.
Fundamental skills for doing my job are good communication, problem-solving, being thorough, thinking creatively, and being motivated while working well to deadlines.
Key subjects I studied at school were: D&T, Art, Technical Drawing, Physics, Maths and English Language.
Key subjects I studied in further education were: D&T, Art and Photography and finally BA (Hons) Industrial Design.
I worked for a design consultancy in Birmingham and moved to another in Worcester before taking up my job with Thomas Dudley.
