Personal Background Information

Design Manager

Simon Mason,  Design Manager,  Thomas Dudley Ltd.

  • D&T is a valuable subject because it combines academic and practical skills to enable students to contribute to the design of quality future products for potential employees and overall society.
  • I would recommend my job because creating new products is immensely rewarding and gives a high level of self-esteem to all involved in the process.
  • The enjoyable part of my job is the variety, ranging from the introduction of new products into our business to problem-solving on individual project areas. In plain English, it’s great to see something for sale that didn’t exist before we designed it!
  • The most valuable advice I can give any student is learn to communicate your ideas, whether through illustration, model-making or presentations.

The main purpose of my job is project management and progress reporting at board level. I organise design meetings to discuss in detail all aspects of current projects with all departments within our company. I also offer advice to the design team in all aspects of the design process.

My work environment is mainly office-based within the design department although a large amount of my time is spent liaising with other departments throughout our site such as office, factory assembly and testing, tool making. As a department we work as a team on most projects although we do allocate team leaders for individual projects.

Key Activities:

  • Project planning and management
  • Customer liaison

  • Product design
  • Working with other departments
